Attic Project Volunteer Team nominated for award

Volunteers from the new Attic Project are already making an impression. The team were nominated for the 'Third Sector Team of the Year Award' in this year's South Wales Argus Health & Care Awards. The awards recognise the important work of charity and community teams in health and care.

The Attic Project helps people aged 50+ to live more comfortably at home. Our volunteers help our clients to declutter and make space in their homes, enabling repairs & adaptations and helping to reduce the risk of falls.

Our passionate and caring volunteers support our clients to sort through their possessions, taking time to talk about the memories evoked by treasured items and helping to dispose of things with sensitivity and care for the environment.
Reminiscence Project Coordinator, Catherine, said "Our volunteers have genuine empathy and provide non-judgemental support to people who may be feeling overwhelmed."

"Taking the time to reminisce can make it easier for people to let go of items or provide a legacy for family and community."

Though the Attic Project was only launched at the start of this year, volunteers are already making a big difference to client's lives.

Following a fall, Naomi needed to convert her utility room into a downstairs bathroom;

"My volunteer, Rob, has been so helpful. No task was too much trouble for him. I am at a loss for words to say how he has helped me. I could not have done this work without his help, reassuring me all the way that everything would be alright."
On the 18th October, Rob and Catherine, along with Attic Project Development Officer Charlotte, attended the Health & Care Awards Dinner at Chepstow Racecourse. Though not winners on the night, the team were awarded with a finalist's certificate, which Rob collected on behalf of all the Attic Project volunteers.
Being nominated for an award in the first year of the project is a great achievement of which our volunteers can be really proud – a huge congratulations to all our Attic Project Volunteers!

The Attic Project is a partnership project between Care & Repair and VCS Cymru and is funded by the Big Lottery Fund across Newport, Cardiff and The Vale of Glamorgan.
