Warm Hearts Winter campaign helps older people

Care & Repair Cymru has joined forces with Muslim Aid to help distribute winter warm pack to older, vulnerable people across Wales.

Muslim Aid’s Warm Hearts Winter campaign aims to support refugees and vulnerable individuals and families across the world during the winter months, however the charity also recognises there are many people in the UK who also need help to stay warm during the winter months such as older people and the homeless.

Care & Repair will distribute the winter warm packs and fit draft excluders and radiator panels for client’s living in cold, draftee homes.

Jehangir Malik OBE, Chief Executive Officer of Muslim Aid said: “I have personally witnessed extreme poverty and the impact it’s had on the most vulnerable in societies in some of the poorest countries across the globe. To witness it within UK, one of the most developed countries in the world is truly heart-breaking and should not be happening.

“Thousands of families and individuals across the UK suffer the effects of poverty daily, which are amplified during the winter months. The freezing temperatures we are currently experiencing are deadly to those who are most vulnerable within our communities and each year we reach out to thousands of these individuals with our outstanding partners, such as Care & Repair Cymru. It is through partnerships such as these that we are able to collectively begin to change this reality.”

Chris Jones, Chief Executive of Care & Repair Cymru said: “Each year we work with over 40, 000 older people to help them repair and maintain their homes so that they are able to live in warmer, more suitable homes.  Yet sadly last year there were 1,800 excess winter deaths in Wales, with older people being the most vulnerable.  .

“We are grateful to Muslim Aid for donating these warm packs, draft excluders and radiator panels for distribution to our most vulnerable clients.  They will certainly make a difference to the comfort and warmth of the older people who receive them. “
