Skydiving for Care & Repair – 40 seconds of terror!
Over the past few weeks I have been asked more times than I can remember if I have gone completely nuts. Why? Well… I decided to do a sponsored sky dive to raise money for Care and Repair across Wales.
Why skydiving? Our Patron, Dilys Price, who is 84, regularly skydives. She told me it is the best thing she has ever done, so I had to try it!
And I have. Last Saturday I joined other excited, but apprehensive, “first timers” at Swansea Skydive for my jump. After a detailed briefing, where we learnt we would be falling at 125 mph towards the ground for 40 seconds before our parachute opened, and that we would then go from falling at 125 mph to 10 mph in 5 seconds, (quite a jolt!), there was no going back.
We were kitted out in jumpsuits and harnesses (very fetching!) and off we went to the plane for the 15 minute flight, up into the skies above Swansea to 12,000 feet, before the door opened and, with my tandem buddy, I jumped.
The next 2 minutes of my life were both terrifying and exhilarating in equal measure.
Would I do it again? Probably not, but I’m glad I did it this once. Knowing I have, raised almost £1,500 for Care & Repair due to the generosity of my sponsors which makes the 40 seconds of terror really worthwhile.
The services Care & Repair provide are free for our clients, but they do cost money, which was why I decided to take the jump (literally!!!). By doing something I would not normally have considered in a million years, has allowed me, with help from my friends, to raise much needed funds to help more older people in Wales live an independent, safe life in their own home.
